Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder that causes brown or gray patches to appear on the skin. The most common area for melasma to appear is on the face. However, due to sun exposure it may appear in other areas such as the forearms, neck, and shoulders. When appearing on the face the most common areas are cheeks, forehead, the bridge of the nose, chin, and upper lip.
Although the exact cause of melasma is not fully clear, some contributing factors have been identified as birth control pills, pregnancy, stress, thyroid disease, and sun exposure. Also, there might be a genetic component to melasma as people whose close relatives have experienced melasma are more likely to develop it themselves.
Skin is made up of three layers. The outer layer is the epidermis, the middle layer is called the dermis and the deepest layer is the subcutaneous layer. The epidermis contains cells called melanocytes that store and produce a dark color (pigment) known as melanin. In response to light, heat, ultraviolet radiation or by an unbalanced hormonal situation, the melanocytes are stimulated to produce more melanin and that’s why your skin darkens or develops melasma.
Melasma is typically a chronic disorder. This means that it’s long-lasting. Some people have melasma for years or their entire lives. Other people may have melasma for just a short period of time, such as during pregnancy.
There are multiple temporally treatments that have been around for years that are available for melasma such as lightening creams, topical steroids, chemical peels, dermabrasion, and microdermabrasion. These treatments strip away the top layers of the skin and may help the appearance by temporarily lighten the color of the dark patches. These products or treatments are generally short acting and the melasma most often returns. Generally the patient will have to maintain a vigorous skin care program and strict adherence to scheduled maintenance treatments.
The StarWalker Melasma Treatment is different than other existing treatments because it is not trying to lighten up the color of the skin or suppress the appearance of dark spots. The StarWalker Melasma Treatment is a laser treatment designed specifically to break apart the pigments without damaging any other healthy cells.
For melasma, a difficult-to-treat condition, the Star-Walker treatment is especially effective due to the selectivity of Q-switched light which enables it to break apart pigment only and not affect other skin cells. This means that pigment destruction can take place without ablating the skin – a unique feature of this technology. The StarWalker is so powerful that it can easily treat many other pigment related issues such as complex, multi-colored tattoos and Nevus of Ito (a colored birth mark).
By following the six-treatment protocol, the StarWalker Laser effectively addresses the inflammatory phenomenon, removes the pigment (session-by-session), reduces vascularization in the area, recovers tissue hemostasis and rejuvenates the dermis. This represents a complete treatment for melasma which maximally inhibits the potential for the recurrence of the condition.
In an on-going study done on patients that had a 4 melasma treatment protocol plan, results demonstrated continued improvement up to a year and long lasting results up to 3 years (so far). Maintenance treatments can be performed at first sign of recurrence if needed.
The best way to prevent melasma from coming back or getting worse is to avoid the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) rays act on certain cells in your skin to actually increase pigment production which, in turn, makes your melasma worse. Because of this, daily usage of a high quality Sun Block (not just sunscreen) is highly recommended.
It is also important to properly evaluate and maintain balanced hormone levels, stress levels and thyroid disease.
In house financing is a multi payment program created to help patients easily manage the cost of the melasma treatment package. There is no credit check and program structure involves collecting 30% (of the total value of the package) before the first treatment and splitting the remaining balance into six monthly payments to be charged on a credit card placed on file.
No interest will be charged at any time and treatments will be scheduled and performed as long as the monthly payments are collected on time. If for any reason the monthly payments are interrupted, the treatments will be paused until the account balanced is properly paid off.
